Wat Khunaram, Buddhist temple in Na Mueang, Thailand.
Wat Khunaram is a Buddhist temple in the Na Mueang district of Koh Samui, Thailand, located along Route 4169 between Na Mueang and Hua Thanon. The compound includes several buildings with traditional tiered roofs, golden statues, and a central shrine that houses a glass case containing mummified remains.
The temple gained wider attention in 1973 when a monk who had been ordained there passed away during meditation and left instructions for his body to be preserved. His remains have been kept on display ever since, becoming the main reason most visitors come to this site.
Inside the temple, a glass case holds the mummified body of a revered monk, and visitors regularly leave flowers, candles, and fruit in front of it. This form of offering is common in Thai Buddhist practice and shows how local communities honor those seen as spiritually advanced.
The temple is open daily during daylight hours and does not charge an entry fee, making it easy to include in a day trip around the island. Shoulders and legs should be covered before entering, as modest dress is expected in all Thai Buddhist temples.
The monk is said to have lived on very little food and spent long hours in meditation in the years before his death, which some believe contributed to the preservation of his body. His remains now wear sunglasses placed there because the original eyes deteriorated over time.
