Khao Luang cave

Khao Luang cave is a limestone temple in Phetchaburi with several interconnected chambers featuring natural ceiling openings. Daylight streams through these gaps onto numerous Buddha statues positioned throughout the interior spaces.

King Mongkut used this cave for meditation and religious study during his monastic years in the 1800s. The site later became an important sanctuary for Buddhist monks and followers throughout the region.

More than 180 Buddha statues representing different stages of life stand within the cave, alongside pagodas where monks perform regular religious ceremonies.

Arriving early in the day works best to see the natural light inside the cave at its fullest. The path to the entrance goes uphill, so carrying water and wearing good shoes will make the visit more comfortable.

A natural hole in the cave ceiling casts a straight beam of light onto a large golden Buddha statue in the main chamber. This light effect is particularly strong in early morning hours when the sun hits it at the right angle.
