Gurbanguly Hajji Mosque, Islamic mosque in Mary, Turkmenistan
The Gurbanguly Hajji Mosque is a large Islamic prayer hall in Mary built entirely from white marble. Four tall minarets frame the structure, while a central dome rises above the interior space, creating a striking architectural composition.
Construction began in 2001 following designs by local architects, with a Turkish construction firm handling the project. The work was finished in 2009, completing a modern addition to the city's religious landscape.
The mosque displays traditional Islamic design through its marble surfaces and decorative majolica tilework that adorns the walls. Quranic verses appear as embossed inscriptions throughout the interior, forming a key part of the visual experience.
The interior is divided into separate areas for men and women to serve different prayer groups. Visitors should dress modestly and be prepared for activity during prayer times when the space becomes more crowded.
In 2018, renovation work added gold paint to the central dome, creating a striking visual contrast with the white marble. This addition fundamentally changed how the building appears against the city skyline.
