Garabogazköl, Saline bay in Balkan Region, Turkmenistan
Garabogazköl is a saline bay in the Balkan Region connected to the Caspian Sea through a narrow, rocky passage. The body of water covers a large area with an average depth of roughly 10 meters.
The bay formed through its connection with the Caspian Sea and was used for salt extraction for many years. In the 1930s, operations shifted northwest where new industrial facilities were developed.
The name Garabogaz means Black Strait, referring to the dark appearance of the narrow waterway that links this bay to the Caspian Sea.
The bay's salinity is substantially higher than that of the Caspian Sea, creating a highly concentrated salt environment. This extreme saltiness affects life in the water and conditions visitors may observe.
A narrow rocky passage connects the bay to the Caspian Sea and has shaped its appearance throughout history. This tight connection is the most striking feature of the entire area.
