National Library of Tunisia, National library in Tunis, Tunisia.
The National Library of Tunisia is the main public library of the country, located in central Tunis. The building spreads across several floors and contains reading rooms, research spaces, and exhibition areas dedicated to the national written heritage.
The institution was founded during the colonial period and initially served administrative purposes. After independence, it was transformed into the country's official national library and gradually expanded.
The library holds handwritten manuscripts in Arabic and other languages covering centuries of Tunisian scholarship. Walking through the exhibition areas, visitors can see how deeply rooted written culture is in this country.
A photo ID is required to access certain sections, especially the archives and manuscript collections. Researchers and students can also use the copying and digitization services available on site.
The library is legally entitled to receive a copy of every work published in Tunisia, meaning every printed book or document must be deposited here. This means the collection grows automatically alongside the entire national publishing output.
