Theatre of Dougga
Theatre of Dougga, Roman theatre in Teboursouk, Tunisia
The Theatre of Dougga is a Roman structure near Teboursouk with semicircular seating rows carved into the slope. The stage wall features columns and decorative elements, with the layout designed to accommodate thousands of viewers while overlooking the surrounding landscape.
The theatre was constructed between 168 and 169 AD during the Roman period, funded by a wealthy local benefactor. This era of prosperity in the region enabled the development of grand public structures in the provinces.
The theatre hosts the International Festival of Dougga, bringing performers from across the region to this ancient venue. This practice connects visitors with how the space was used for entertainment in Roman times.
The complex has multiple entry points and information panels explaining the architectural features to help you navigate the space. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and some areas have steep sections.
The stage backdrop preserves one of the most complete sets of decorative elements from a Roman theatre in Africa. This intact embellishment lets visitors understand how elaborately these venues were originally designed and built.
