Mosque of the Barber

The Mosque of the Barber consists of multiple courtyards, a mausoleum, a religious school, and accommodation spaces arranged around a central prayer area.

Built in the 17th century under Hammuda Pasha Bey's direction, the mosque complex replaced an earlier 14th-century structure marking the tomb of Abu Zama'a al-Balawi.

The site contains the tomb of Abu Zama'a al-Balawi, who carried three hairs from Prophet Muhammad's beard and became the patron saint of Kairouan.

The entrance leads through a brick-paved courtyard to the mausoleum chamber, featuring porticoes and decorated walls with polychrome ceramic tiles.

The minaret displays Hispano-Moorish architecture with twin bays framed by ceramic coverings and stands at the northwest corner of the main courtyard.
