Catacombs of Sousse, Underground burial complex in Sousse, Tunisia
The catacombs form a network of underground tunnels containing thousands of burial chambers carved into soft limestone walls extending several kilometers beneath the city.
Discovered between 1906 and 1910, these underground galleries date from the early Christian period and contain numerous tombs from both Christian and pagan communities.
The burial chambers display inscriptions, symbols, and carvings that demonstrate the funeral practices and religious beliefs of ancient North African communities.
Guided tours lead visitors through illuminated sections of the tunnels, with advance reservations required and comfortable walking shoes recommended for the uneven ground.
The temperature within the underground chambers remains constant throughout the year, contributing to the preservation of ancient artifacts and architectural elements.
