Sublime Porte, Historical building in Istanbul, Turkey
The Sublime Porte, also known as the Ottoman Porte or High Porte, is a synecdoche for the central government of the Ottoman Empire.
Established in the 15th century, the Sublime Porte served as the principal government building of the Ottoman Empire until 1922.
The term 'Sublime Porte' is a metaphorical reference to the gate giving access to the block of buildings that housed the principal state departments in Istanbul.
Today, the site of the Sublime Porte is home to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Sublime Porte is often associated with the extensive administrative and military reforms carried out by Sultan Mahmud II.
