Muğla Province

Muğla is a province on the southwestern coast of Turkey with access to the Aegean Sea. The area includes flat coastal strips with bays and forested mountain slopes that extend inland.

The region belonged to ancient Caria and later became part of the Ottoman Empire in the late 14th century. Between these periods, the principality of the Menteshe Beys briefly ruled after a campaign under Timur.

The bays along the coast often carry names from ancient Greek and reflect centuries of settlement. Fishermen still moor at small jetties tucked between rocks that have been used for generations.

Most coastal towns are reached through two airports near Dalaman and Milas, with buses and taxis running to the villages. Several marinas offer mooring for boats and serve as starting points for trips along the coast.

Over a hundred archaeological sites lie scattered between the villages and mountains, many reachable only on foot or by boat. The tomb of the ancient boxer Diagoras sits in a less visited part of the landscape and recalls the Greek past.
