Atatürk Olympic Stadium, Multi-purpose sports venue in Başakşehir, Turkey.

The Atatürk Olympic Stadium is a multi-purpose sports venue in Başakşehir with seating for over 76,000 spectators and an Olympic-standard running track. The stands wrap around the playing field, and the roof covers large sections of the upper tiers.

Construction began in 1999 as part of Istanbul's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games and was completed in 2002. The venue was later selected to host international football finals, including the Champions League finals in 2005 and 2023.

The venue carries the name of the republic's founder, which reflects the national importance of sports in public life. On match days, the surrounding area becomes a gathering point for supporters who travel from across the city to cheer their teams.

The venue offers ample parking and sits next to the M3 metro line, which provides easy access from the city center. During major events, arriving early helps avoid crowded entrances and makes navigation through the facility easier.

During the 2005 final, Liverpool came back from three goals down at halftime to equalize and eventually win on penalties against AC Milan. This match is remembered by football fans as one of the most dramatic comebacks in the sport's history.

Largest stadiums in the world: capacity, architecture, sports

This collection gathers the largest stadiums on the planet, ranked by seating capacity. From the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, India, which hosts major cricket matches, to the vast American university arenas dedicated to football, and the May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea, these sports facilities demonstrate the scale that infrastructures for competitions and mass gatherings can reach. Each stadium has its own identity: some are exclusively dedicated to a specific sport, while others serve as flexible venues capable of hosting various events. Their sizes enable them to accommodate between 100,000 and over 150,000 spectators, providing organizers the opportunity to gather large crowds for international competitions, national finals, or major ceremonies.
