Aperlae, Archaeological site in Antalya, Turkey.
The coastal settlement of Aperlae extends between mountains and sea, featuring ancient structures, fortifications, four churches, and numerous stone tombs scattered across the landscape.
Founded between the late 4th and early 3rd century BC, Aperlae maintained continuous habitation for 1,300 years until its abandonment in the 7th century due to Arab raids.
The settlement gained economic importance through the production of purple dye extracted from Murex trunculus mollusks, requiring 12,000 shells to produce 1.4 grams of dye.
Access to Aperlae requires boat transportation during specific tide conditions, as the ancient city lacks direct road connections to modern infrastructure.
The site contains extensive deposits of Murex shells covering 1,600 square meters, integrated into building materials and scattered throughout underwater archaeological remains.
