İstiklal Avenue, Pedestrian street in Istanbul
Istiklal Avenue is one of the most famous avenues in Istanbul, Turkey, visited by nearly 3 million people in a single day over the course of weekends.
During the Ottoman period, the avenue was called 'Cadde-i Kebir' (Grand Avenue) and was a popular spot for Ottoman intellectuals and the bourgeoisie.
The avenue houses boutiques, music stores, bookstores, art galleries, cinemas, theaters, libraries, cafés, pubs, nightclubs, historical patisseries, chocolateries and restaurants.
The historic tram that runs from Taksim Square to Tünel was also re-installed in the early 1990s with the aim of reviving the historic atmosphere of the district.
This elegant pedestrian street is approximately three kilometers long and houses exquisite boutiques, music stores, bookstores, art galleries, cinemas, theaters, libraries, cafés, pubs, night clubs with live music, historical patisseries, chocolateries and restaurants.
