Gökçeada district

Gökçeada district encompasses Turkey's largest island, covering 286.8 square kilometers at the entrance of Saros Bay with a population of 10,721 residents.

The district, formerly called Imbros, underwent substantial demographic changes after 1960 when many Greek inhabitants left and mainland Turkish settlers arrived in the region.

The district maintains connections to both Greek and Turkish heritage through its architecture, traditional farming methods, and local festivities throughout the calendar year.

Regular ferry services connect the district to mainland Turkey, departing from Çanakkale on the Asian side and Kabatepe port near Eceabat on the European side.

The district received recognition as the world's first Cittaslow island in 2011, emphasizing its commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable agriculture practices.
