Cehennemağzı Cave, Archaeological cave complex in Ereğli, Turkey.

Cehennemağzı Cave is a complex of interconnected underground chambers located in Ereğli. Two of these chambers hold underground lakes, while one features decorated floor mosaics with geometric and botanical designs.

Early Christians used this cave system as a secret place for worship and gathered in its chambers. The columns, capitals, and niches carved for oil lamps demonstrate how they adapted the natural space for their needs.

Ancient Greeks linked these caves to the legend of Hercules descending into the underworld to face mythological creatures. The story is still visible today in how locals refer to and understand the site.

Walking through the caves requires sturdy footwear with good grip, as paths are narrow and uneven with varying inclines. Bring a jacket since underground temperatures are noticeably cooler than at the surface.

The second chamber, known as Koca Yusuf Cave, penetrates deep into the mountain and preserves ancient inscriptions carved directly into the rock walls. These marked surfaces bear witness to visitors across centuries who left their mark.
