Dongyin Township

Dongyin Township comprises two villages, Zhongliu and Lehua, spanning 4.4 square kilometers in the East China Sea. The settlement is home to roughly 1,550 residents and sits about 200 kilometers from mainland Taiwan.

The British government funded construction of Dongyong Lighthouse in 1904 following the SS Sobraon shipwreck in 1901 during heavy fog. The lighthouse became a critical aid to navigation in these treacherous waters.

The residents here maintain close ties to Fujian traditions, speaking the Fuzhou dialect and observing local customs that shape daily life. These practices remain visible in family gatherings and community celebrations throughout the year.

Reaching this remote township requires ferry or flight services from other parts of Taiwan, primarily through Nangan Island. Visitors should prepare for limited infrastructure and remain flexible with weather conditions that can affect connections.

Dragon Sea Cave is a natural sea arch formation in granite along the coastline, sculpted by water erosion over centuries. This striking rock formation with its tunnel-like opening becomes a focal point for those curious about coastal geology.
