Lieyu Township, Administrative township in Kinmen County, Taiwan
Lieyu Township consists of three main islands—Lesser Kinmen, Dadan, and Erdan—located 5 kilometers from mainland China across the Taiwan Strait. Five villages spread across these islands form the core of this administrative township.
The area began as a horse pasture during the Tang dynasty and later became a military fortress under the Qing dynasty to defend against external threats. This military role shaped how the settlements developed over centuries.
The five villages reflect customs shaped by Taiwanese and Fujian influences that visitors can see in daily life and traditional architecture. These traditions continue through family practices and local celebrations throughout the year.
Getting there involves taking a regular ferry from Jiugong Pier to Greater Kinmen Island, with a bridge completed in 2022 also offering vehicle access. Check ferry schedules in advance and allow time for the crossing and any vehicle transport.
The Culture Museum documents the region's military past, including a notable 1987 incident involving Vietnamese refugees. This event illustrates the strategic position between two worlds and the human stories behind it.
