Magong Airport, airport in Magong City, Penghu County, Taiwan
Magong Airport is a domestic and joint-use airport on the Penghu Islands, located in Huxi Township off the western coast of Taiwan. It has a single runway and handles both civilian passenger flights and military operations on the same airfield.
The airfield was first developed as a military base during the mid-20th century to support the defense of the Penghu Islands. Over the following decades it was gradually opened to civilian airlines, becoming the main link between the archipelago and Taiwan proper.
For the people living on the Penghu Islands, the airport is the main connection to the rest of Taiwan, and the terminal reflects that local character. Passengers are often islanders traveling for work or family visits rather than tourists passing through.
The terminal is small and easy to navigate, so finding your gate or baggage claim takes only a few minutes. There are few shops and food options inside, so it is better to eat or shop in town before heading to the airport.
Even though the airport handles regular passenger flights, military aircraft are still actively stationed and operate from the same runway, making it one of the few genuinely shared civil-military airfields in the region. Travelers waiting for their flight can occasionally spot military planes parked on the apron just a short distance away.
