Mingjian Shoutian Temple, Chinese temple in Mingjian, Taiwan.
Mingjian Shoutian Temple is located on the Bagua Plateau within the Tri-Mountain National Scenic Area, near the border of Ershui Township. The compound features several buildings with red roofs and ornate decorations, surrounded by natural landscape that sets the site apart from the surrounding area.
Chinese settlers from Fujian founded the temple in 1657, establishing one of the region's oldest religious sites. In 1737, the location received religious confirmation during a birthday celebration for Xuantian Shangdi, which strengthened its importance for believers.
This temple serves as the national center for worshipping Xuantian Shangdi, drawing visitors who come to pray and make ritual offerings at the altars. The place has become an important pilgrimage destination for people throughout Taiwan who feel a connection to this deity.
Visitors can explore the compound on foot and walk past various altar areas to get a sense of the religious practices taking place there. A mobile application also allows you to light digital lanterns and access fortune-telling services from anywhere, even if you cannot visit in person.
During the Lantern Festival, worshippers distribute slices of an enormous rice cake to visitors and pilgrims. This festival offers a rare chance to participate in a tradition practiced year-round in no other place.
