Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum, Museum in Chiayi, Taiwan
The Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum is a large museum complex in Taibao City, Taiwan, combining exhibition halls, gardens, and contemporary buildings with references to traditional ink painting. The site covers a wide area and divides into several zones, including a children's section and rotating gallery spaces.
The museum opened in December 2015 to make collections from the main site in Taipei accessible in southern Taiwan. The opening marked the completion of a multi-year project to strengthen cultural offerings in the Chiayi region.
The name refers to its connection with the main institution in Taipei, creating a link between northern and southern Taiwan through shared collections. Visitors today encounter exhibits from various Asian regions, including textile works and ceramics spanning several centuries.
The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday, with guided tours offered regularly. A dedicated area for creative activities is available for children, making a visit suitable for families.
During summer months, the grounds host an evening water show with musical accompaniment, lasting around three hours. These performances use the large outdoor water feature and attract many visitors who come after dark.
