Huisun Forest Recreation Area, Forest recreation area in Ren'ai Township, Taiwan
Huisun Forest Recreation Area is a university-managed forest in Ren'ai Township, Taiwan, with deep canyons, waterfalls, and a range of elevations. A network of hiking trails connects the different parts of the forest, from river valleys to wooded ridges.
The area was created in 1916 under the name Nenggao Forest and placed under university management from the start. The name changed in 1963 following the death of Tang Hui-sun, a university president who passed away while doing fieldwork here.
The Seediq, Atayal, and Bunun peoples have long lived in this region and passed down detailed knowledge of the forest. That knowledge still shapes how the land is managed and interpreted for visitors today.
The area is accessible via Provincial Highway No. 21, and regular bus services run from Puli Township. Rain can quickly affect trail conditions in the canyons, so it is worth checking conditions before setting out.
This forest is one of the few in Taiwan managed directly by a university and still used for active research. Visitors sometimes come across students doing fieldwork along the trails, which gives the place an unusual character compared to other recreation forests.
