Aogu Wetland, Coastal wetland in Dongshi Township, Taiwan.
Aogu Wetland is a coastal wetland in Dongshi Township, Taiwan, where the Beigang River meets a network of drainage channels and open water areas. The terrain is made up of reed beds, mud flats, and shallow pools arranged across a broad, flat coastal plain.
The land was once used by the Taiwan Sugar Corporation for sugarcane farming, fishing, and agriculture. When seawater gradually moved into the area, those activities became unworkable and the terrain shifted naturally into wetland over the following decades.
Birdwatchers set up tripods along the paths here and spend hours watching for migratory species, making patient observation a common sight. Local nature groups organize regular outings, and the wetland has become a meeting point for people who follow the seasonal rhythms of birds.
The wetland is easiest to reach by car, though buses from a nearby train station also serve the area. Early morning and dusk are the best times to visit, as wildlife tends to be most active during those hours.
The site was listed under the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement focused on wetland protection, making it one of the few places in Taiwan to appear on that global register. This recognition came not because of formal nature reserve status, but through the value of the habitat itself.
