Shanlinxi Forest Recreation Area is a woodland destination at 1600 meters elevation featuring three main waterfalls and multiple walking paths through dense forest. The trails connect different sections and lead to various waterfall pools accessible via marked routes.
The forest is home to an ancient red cypress tree that has existed for thousands of years, serving as a witness to Taiwan's natural landscape evolution. This old tree stands as a central landmark within the woodland area.
The twelve switchbacks leading up the path follow the Chinese zodiac, with each turn named after a different animal sign.
The area is reachable by taking bus 6883 from Taichung to Xitou, followed by a direct connection that takes about 45 minutes to arrive. The marked trails are easy to follow, allowing visitors to explore the forest without special preparation.
The area features five named waterfalls - Qinglong, Songlong, Shyi-jing-ji, Yenyen, and Tian-Ti-Yen - all connected by linked pathways. This waterfall chain creates a continuous water route that allows visitors to experience multiple natural pools on a single walk.
