Shanshui Shangdi Temple, Chinese temple in Shanshui Village, Taiwan.
Shanshui Shangdi Temple is a Chinese temple in Shanshui Village, in the south of Taiwan, built in the traditional style common to local religious architecture. The building features a layered roof with painted clay figures along its ridges and elaborately carved wooden doors at the entrance.
The temple was founded by settlers who arrived from mainland China and brought with them the worship of Xuantian Shangdi to the Shanshui area. The building was rebuilt and expanded over successive generations as the local community grew around it.
The temple is dedicated to Xuantian Shangdi, a deity associated with protection in Taoist tradition, whose image stands at the main altar. Visitors can watch worshippers light incense and place offerings during daily prayers.
The temple sits in the center of Shanshui Village and is easy to reach on foot from the surrounding streets. Visiting during a regular weekday gives you more space to look around, while festival days bring larger gatherings to the courtyard.
During the Lantern Festival, a giant effigy made of rice straw has its eyes painted in a ritual ceremony that is specific to this village and not found elsewhere. This act is said to bring the figure to life before it is burned at the end of the celebration.
