Hochang building materials company, Historical materials company in Guangfu Village, Taiwan
The Hochang building is a two-story structure combining coral stone, bricks, concrete, and premium cypress wood in its construction. The ground floor now operates as a restaurant while the upper floor preserves original Japanese-style rooms with sleeping configurations for eight and six guests.
The building was established in 1919 and stands as a reminder of Taiwan's Japanese colonial period. It later served as the residence of Lu An-De, who held the position of seventh magistrate of Penghu County and brought prominence to the location.
The building displays a blend of Japanese and Baroque design features with white walls and decorative relief work on its facade. Wooden lion sculptures carved at the entrance reflect the commercial aesthetic valued by its early owners.
The ground floor operates as a restaurant where visitors can access and experience the original space. The upper floor rooms are preserved but may have limited access, so check in advance about which areas are open to view.
The structure includes high-quality timber imported from Tangshan in China, revealing early trade connections between Taiwan and mainland China. This choice of materials shows how prosperous the early owners were and how interconnected the region was at that time.
