Pochaiv, city of Ukraine
Pochaiv is a small town in western Ukraine, in the Kremenets Raion of Ternopil Oblast, known above all for the large monastery that sits on a hill overlooking it. The town itself spreads along a low ridge, with modest streets, small shops, and local cafes making up the everyday fabric of the place.
Pochaiv appears in written records for the first time in 1441, but the town only rose to wider importance when monks fleeing devastation in Kyiv settled on the hill here. Those monks had left after the Mongol raids of 1240 destroyed their original monastery, and the community they built in Pochaiv gradually became one of the most visited religious sites in eastern Europe.
The name Pochaiv is tied to a legend in which the Mother of God appeared in a pillar of fire on a rock, leaving a footprint in the stone. Pilgrims come from across the region to venerate this stone, which is kept inside the main cathedral and remains the heart of religious life here.
The monastery grounds are open during the day and easy to reach on foot from the town center, though the site sits on a hill and the paths can be steep in places. Visitors should dress modestly, as the complex is an active place of worship where services take place throughout the day.
The monastery's bell tower, completed in 1871, houses one of its largest bells at over 11 tons, and the tower strikes every quarter hour without pause. This means that no matter where you are in town, you are never far from hearing it ring out across the rooftops.
