Makiivka is a city in eastern Donetsk Oblast in Ukraine, situated roughly thirteen kilometers from Donetsk. The settlement spreads across several districts and belongs to the administrative unit of Makiivka Hromada.
A Cossack settlement emerged at this location in 1690 and carried a different name at first. The discovery of coal reserves in the late nineteenth century transformed the location into an industrial center.
The city preserves 147 architectural monuments and historical sites, including burial mounds from ancient Scythian and Sarmatian nomadic tribes.
Railway connections run through different sectors and make it easier to reach various areas within the city. Bus routes lead to other destinations in Ukraine, though the current situation may affect travel times.
The address system in the city can confuse visitors because many streets carry identical names. House numbers repeat across different districts, making orientation a challenge.
