Source of the Kalmius River Gidrological Natural Monument

The Source of the Kalmius is a protected natural monument where multiple springs merge across several hectares to form the beginning of a major river. These springs create the starting point of a waterway that flows through the region.

The site received official protection in 2000 as part of Ukraine's effort to safeguard important water sources in the eastern part of the country. This designation reflected growing concern for preserving natural water systems.

The site serves as a learning destination where students and nature enthusiasts observe how water naturally emerges and sustains a river system. People come here to witness the beginning of a major waterway in its raw form.

The site is located near the village of Mineralne in Yasynuvata district and can be reached by local transportation from the city of Donetsk. Travel to the area works best during drier seasons when ground conditions allow easier access to the spring area.

The springs support specialized plant and animal species found only in these specific water conditions and nowhere else in the region. This assembly of adapted organisms makes the location a rare example of a specialized habitat in the local landscape.
