Druzhkivka, Industrial city in eastern Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine
Druzhkivka is a city in eastern Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, located where two rivers meet in a region with coal and mineral resources. The town grew around factories that produced mining equipment, machinery, and other industrial goods.
The city emerged from a small metallurgical settlement before 1917 into a major machine-building center following the Russian Revolution. During the 20th century, it expanded through investments in factory construction and mining technology.
The 2001 census revealed a population composition of 64.4% Ukrainians and 32.2% Russians, with Russian being the primary language for 70.3% of residents.
The best time to visit is during the summer months when weather is milder and walking through town is easier. Most places are accessible on foot or by local public transport that connects different areas of the city.
The city lost a large portion of its population since the 1980s, reflecting its transformation from a major industrial hub to a smaller settlement. This decline left behind many empty factory buildings that stand as reminders of its former economic importance.
