Kyiv Funicular, Funicular railway in central Kyiv, Ukraine
The funicular railway connects the historic Upper Town district with the Podil neighborhood through a steep slope overlooking the Dnieper River.
The Belgian-funded funicular system began operations in 1905, constructed under the supervision of engineer Arthur Abrahamson who studied in Zurich and Saint Petersburg.
Initially named Mykhailivskyi Mekhanichnyi Pidyom due to its location near St. Michael's Cathedral, the funicular represents early 20th-century transportation engineering in Ukraine.
The two-car system operates daily, serving up to 15,000 passengers with a three-minute journey time between stations at a cost of 8 hryvnias.
The funicular cars, marked with Cyrillic letters for left and right, traverse a 238-meter track with a 36 percent grade using a passing-loop system.
