Saint Vladimir Monument, Bronze monument in Kyiv, Ukraine
The Saint Vladimir Monument is a bronze figure on a tall pedestal in Kyiv, Ukraine. The statue shows the prince holding a cross and stands on a hill overlooking the Dnipro.
Tsar Nicholas I commissioned the work in 1848 as a sign of the link between Russia and Kievan Rus. The unveiling took place in October 1853, a few weeks before the start of the Crimean War.
The prince holds a cross and faces the river, like someone announcing a new era. Visitors today place flowers or pause before the figure to remember the roots of eastern Christianity.
The hill sits about ten minutes' walk from the nearest metro station and offers an open plaza for walkers. On some days the wind blows hard on the hilltop, so a jacket can be useful.
A relief on the pedestal shows people stepping into water to be baptized. Some locals say that beneath the stone a deep well from earlier times lies hidden.
