Hostomel, Settlement center in Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine.
Hostomel is a settlement center in Kyiv Oblast, located roughly twenty kilometers northwest of the capital. This community includes the main center and three nearby villages—Horenka, Moshchun, and Ozera—spread along local roads and open countryside.
Documents first mention this place in 1494, and it received Magdeburg rights from King Sigismund III of Poland in 1614, granting local autonomy to run municipal affairs. On March 6, 2022, the settlement earned Hero City of Ukraine status following fighting at the nearby airport during the Russian invasion.
The settlement functions as a Cossack hundredth town of the Kyiv regiment, representing traditional administrative divisions in Ukrainian military history.
This area sits roughly halfway between Kyiv and the northwestern suburbs, accessible by several regional roads. Visitors exploring the region will find administrative offices, bus stops, and local shops that serve as a hub for the surrounding villages.
The settlement sits at an elevation of roughly 109 meters (358 feet) above sea level on gently rolling terrain north of the Dnipro River. This position made it a strategic point on historic trade routes linking Kyiv to western territories.
