The settlement was founded in 1686 as Bielska Sloboda when military personnel from the Ostrohozk Sloboda Cossack Regiment arrived to establish a community. This military foundation shaped the town's early growth and structure.
The Joy of All Who Sorrows Convent shapes the spiritual life of the city since its founding in 1851. After closing during Soviet times, it reopened in 1992 and remains a place where residents gather for worship and reflection.
The city is reachable through telephone area code +380 6461 and serves a population spread throughout the settlement. Visitors will find standard urban facilities with local services and shops available.
The location served as a World War II prisoner camp where Polish officers were detained before their later transfer. Many were subsequently involved in what became known as the Katyn massacre, a tragic moment in European history.
