Khmilnyk, city of Ukraine
Khmilnyk is a city in Vinnytsia Oblast in central Ukraine, known primarily for its mineral springs used for health treatments. Hotels and spa facilities have developed around these springs, giving the town a character centered on the natural water sources.
Khmilnyk was first mentioned in records during the 14th century and changed hands several times before becoming part of the Russian Empire. In the 19th century, the town's mineral springs were identified and put to therapeutic use, which set the direction that the place has followed ever since.
The name Khmilnyk comes from the Ukrainian word for hops, a plant that once grew widely across this area. Traces of this heritage appear in local murals and decorations that visitors notice while walking through the town center.
The town sits in central Ukraine and is easily reached from Vinnytsia, the nearest large city. Summer is the busiest season, with outdoor pools and parks in full use, but spa facilities tend to stay open throughout the year.
The Southern Bug river runs directly through the town, and its banks have been shaped into walkways and small sandy spots used by visitors throughout the warmer months. This combination of a river and mineral springs in one place makes Khmilnyk a rare case among Ukrainian spa towns.
