Verkhnodniprovsk, City in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast (province) of Ukraine
Verkhnodniprovsk is a small city in Ukraine situated in Dnipropetrovska region, where the Samotkan River flows into the Kamianske Reservoir and then into the Dnieper. The city consists of a mix of older brick buildings, simple wooden houses, and newer structures arranged along straightforward streets that connect different parts of town.
The city was founded around 1779 and developed as a center for workers and industry, supported by local river resources and trade. In 2020, Verkhnodniprovsk was administratively reorganized and became part of the larger Kamianske Raion after previously being its own district.
The name Verkhnodniprovsk refers to its location on the Dnieper River, with 'Verkhno' meaning 'upper' in Ukrainian. Daily life centers around the waterfront and local commerce, where residents maintain long-standing connections to their community and shared history.
The city is easy to explore on foot, with clear streets connecting main locations including local shops and monuments in the town center. The nearest train station is in Novomykolaivka, about 13 kilometers away, and the larger city of Kamianske lies about 25 kilometers northwest.
The city is home to footballer Yehor Yarmolyuk, commemorated with a monument in town, who now plays for English club Brentford. A recently removed bust of a prominent Soviet politician reflects how local views of history and identity continue to shift.
