Kamiany mohyly

Kamiany mohyly is a nature reserve in Donetsk Oblast featuring granite rock formations that rise 50 to 70 meters above the surrounding steppe. These stone ridges dominate the flat terrain and create a distinctive geological landscape in eastern Ukraine.

The reserve was established in 1927 to protect an area containing remains from multiple ancient cultures. The territory shows traces of the Yamna and Catacomb civilizations that occupied this land in prehistoric times.

The stone formations here held spiritual importance for multiple ancient societies who gathered in this place. Traces of these earlier civilizations remain visible across the landscape today.

The reserve can be reached via the road connecting Mariupol and Zaporizhzhia, with marked trails leading through the rock formations and botanical areas. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring the terrain.

The granite here draws attention from geologists due to its particular mineral composition and formation history. Researchers regularly study the physical properties and geological development of these rock formations.
