Vynohradiv Castle

Vynohradiv Castle sits on a hill overlooking the city and features stone walls and fortifications that still stand in parts today. The remains show multiple building phases and architectural styles that come from different time periods.

Records of the castle first appear in 903, when it served as a defensive stronghold and administrative center for Ugocsa County. Control of the site and surrounding region changed after World War One and the Treaty of Trianon in 1920.

The remaining stone structures show building techniques from different periods and cultures, reflecting the region's past as a crossroads between Hungarian and Eastern European traditions. Walking through the ruins, you can see how multiple peoples shaped this place over centuries.

The ruins are open and free to visit throughout the year as they sit within public space in the city. You can reach the site via Vulytsya Kotsyubynskoho street, which leads directly to the hillside where the remains stand.

The site has different names across languages: Nagyszőlősi Kankó-vár in Hungarian and Виноградівський замок in Ukrainian, reflecting the region's multicultural past. These language variations tell the story of how many different peoples have called this area home.
