The Dormition Cathedral, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in historical center of Odesa, Ukraine
The Dormition Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral in the center of Odesa, built in the Russian Revival style and rising to 56 meters (about 184 feet). Its exterior features a large central dome, smaller towers, and decorative arched details typical of that architectural period.
The cathedral was built in the late 19th century on the site of an earlier church that had stood there before. Over time it became the seat of the Eparchy of Odesa and Izmail, a role it still holds today.
The cathedral is an active place of worship where believers gather daily for prayer and services following Eastern Orthodox rites. Inside, visitors can see people lighting candles, venerating icons, and taking part in sung liturgies that fill the space with chant.
The cathedral stands on Preobrazhenska Street in central Odesa and is easy to reach on foot from most of the city's main areas. Visitors are expected to dress modestly, and women are generally asked to cover their heads before entering.
During the Soviet period the cathedral was closed for a time and repurposed for other uses, as happened to many churches across the region. Some of the original 19th-century icons and artworks survived that period and returned to their place after the building reopened for worship.
