Korets Castle, Baroque castle in Korets, Ukraine
Korets Castle is a Baroque fortress located on the banks of the Korchyk River, protected by moats and defensive walls built from locally quarried stone. The ruins still reveal the characteristic architectural features of this former residence with its well-defined fortifications.
Prince Feodor Ostrogski founded the castle around 1400 as the residence of the princely House of Korets, a role it held until 1651. After this period, it lost its status as a seat of nobility in the region.
The main tower serves as an enduring symbol featured on the official emblem of Korets. It represents the local identity and connection between the town and its heritage.
The site is best reached on foot by following the marked path from central Korets that runs along the Korchyk River toward the ruins. Wear sturdy shoes and take care when exploring, as parts of the structure remain unstable or unsafe.
In the late 1700s, the castle housed a porcelain workshop under the patronage of Józef Klemens Czartoryski, an unexpected industrial transformation of the former seat of power. A fire in 1797 destroyed this enterprise and forever altered the site's purpose.
