Church of the Ascension, Romny, Orthodox church in Romny, Ukraine.
The Church of the Ascension is a classical Orthodox house of worship with a circular ground plan and three domed roof sections, complemented by galleries on the eastern and western sides. The building complex includes a bell tower that houses the Trehsvyatitelsky church on its ground floor.
A wooden church from 1700 originally stood at this location and was replaced by a stone structure in 1795. The new building received its consecration in July 1801 and has defined the town's appearance since then.
The interior holds an iconostasis designed by architect Ivan Babitsky and serves as a central gathering place for Orthodox Christians in the town. The building shapes the religious life of the community to this day.
The church sits on Soborna Street in Romny's town center and is easy to locate. The complex with its bell tower and adjoining structures can be viewed from all sides.
The bell tower received an octagonal upper tier in 1895, topped with a neo-baroque dome that sets it apart from other Orthodox churches in the region. This addition gave the building its distinctive appearance that visitors see today.
