Вознесенський собор, church building in Konotop, Ukraine

The Ascension Cathedral in Konotop is an Orthodox church building from the 19th century with a characteristic cross shape and a single dome over the main hall. The facade features four-column porticos, and the interior is decorated with icons while displaying high walls and large windows.

The building was erected between 1824 and 1846 and funded by Ivan Dragomirov, the father of a notable military figure. During Soviet times it was closed in 1920, its reliquaries were destroyed and parts of the structure were later dismantled, but restoration to its original form took place after 1992.

The cathedral is sometimes called the Dragomirova Church, named after the family who funded its construction. Visitors can observe how the building functions today as a gathering place for worship and community events, reflecting the religious life of the city.

The building sits near Vladimir Veliky Street and is easily reached on foot. The grounds feel quiet and manageable in scale, allowing visitors to move at a leisurely pace while exploring the facade and immediate surroundings.

A notable detail of the site is the small bell tower on the exterior visible from a distance and serving as a landmark for the place. The bell sounds have formed an anchor point in the city's daily rhythm across decades and remain for many residents a valued acoustic symbol.
