National Historical and Cultural Preserve «Hetman's capital», Protected historical area in Baturynska miska hromada, Ukraine.
The National Historical and Cultural Preserve «Hetman's capital» is a protected area in Baturyn, Ukraine, bringing together archaeological sites and historic buildings from different centuries. The preserve covers the present-day town and includes both indoor museums and outdoor areas with remains from the Cossack period.
Baturyn served as the political and military center of the Cossack Hetmanate, where leaders such as Ivan Mazepa held power. The town was largely destroyed in 1708 on the orders of Peter I, which ended its role as a seat of power.
Four museums on the grounds display weapons, art objects, and everyday items from the Cossack period. Walking through the exhibitions gives a direct sense of how these communities lived and governed their territory.
The grounds have walking paths connecting the outdoor areas and the museums, so everything can be explored on foot. It is worth setting aside enough time since the sites are spread across the town.
The palace of Hetman Kyrylo Rozumovsky was designed by Scottish architect Charles Cameron, best known before this project as a court architect for Russian Empress Catherine II. It is the only surviving residence of a Hetman in Ukraine.
