Zaliztsi Castle, 16th century castle in Zaliztsi, Ukraine
Zaliztsi Castle is a 16th-century fortified structure with a rectangular layout and four corner towers built on the Seret River's bank. Today the site contains fragments of the northern and western walls along with parts of a five-sided tower that still stand.
Martin Kamyanetsky founded this defensive structure in 1516 at a strategic location along the river. The site later changed hands multiple times and served different purposes, from military stronghold to noble residence and witnessed several sieges over the centuries.
The site served as a residence for various noble families who shaped its character over centuries. Visitors can still trace the influence of these different rulers in the remaining structures today.
The site sits directly on the Seret River and is easily reached from the village of Zaliztsi. The ruins are partially exposed, allowing visitors to see the foundations and wall fragments that remain visible above ground.
During a 1675 siege by Turkish and Tatar forces, defenders used a black rooster for divination to predict the battle's outcome. This unusual practice reveals the desperation and superstitions of the era.
