Mount Bona, Mountain summit in Kremenets, Ukraine.
Góra Bony is a summit in the Kremenets Mountains in western Ukraine, rising above the town of Kremenets. The hill has a rocky profile with slopes that drop down toward the town on one side and open toward the surrounding plateau on the other.
The hill takes its name from Queen Bona Sforza, who controlled large estates in this region during the 16th century under Polish-Lithuanian rule. Her presence left a mark on many place names and local traditions across the Kremenets area.
The mountain's name comes from Queen Bona Sforza, an Italian-born queen who ruled over this region in the 16th century and left a lasting mark on its identity. Locals still use the name as a natural reference point in the landscape, making it part of everyday speech and orientation.
The ascent starts near the center of Kremenets and can be done on foot along paths that are manageable for most walkers in good shoes. Starting early in the day is a good idea, since the paths can get more crowded later on.
The rock faces along the slopes contain marine fossils, left behind when a shallow sea covered this part of Europe millions of years ago. Walkers who look closely at the exposed stone on the way up can sometimes spot shell shapes pressed into the rock.
