Laure de st-Onuphre, Greek Catholic monastery in Lavriv, Ukraine
The Saint Onuphrius Monastery, also known as Laure de Saint-Onuphre, is a Greek Catholic monastery in the village of Lavriv, in western Ukraine, built in stone and set against a wooded hillside. It consists of a church, monks' residential quarters, and several smaller outbuildings arranged around a central yard.
The monastery was founded in the 13th century, making it one of the oldest monastic sites in western Ukraine. The stone church and the 1842 iconostasis were added later, giving the interior the form it still has today.
The monastery belongs to the Greek Catholic Church, which follows Eastern Christian rites while remaining in communion with Rome, and this dual identity is visible in the interior decoration. The iconostasis inside mixes Eastern Christian forms with local craft traditions, making it a good example of the religious art of western Ukraine.
The monastery is in the village of Lavriv and is easiest to reach by car, as public transport connections to the area are limited. Since it is an active monastery, visitors should dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees before entering.
Despite its remote setting, the monastery holds national monument status in Ukraine, which places it in the same category as far more visited sites in the country. The way its architecture combines Byzantine forms with local building traditions in a single complex is rarely seen elsewhere in the region.
