Pniv Castle

Pniv Castle is a 16th-century fortress located on elevated ground in western Ukraine, with several towers and fortification walls still visible among the ruins. The site occupies a strategic position in the Nadvirna region, revealing the scale and design of this defensive complex.

Construction of the fortress began in the 1500s and it served as a residence for the Kuropatwa family during a period of regional conflict. The stronghold was built to defend against threats in an area that faced military pressures from neighboring powers.

The castle reflects defensive building methods typical of the time and region, showing how fortifications were designed to protect settlements. Walking through the ruins helps visitors understand how such structures shaped daily life and security for the people living nearby.

The ruins can be reached by taking regional roads to Pniv village, and the elevated location makes the walk moderately steep in places. Wear suitable footwear as the ground can be uneven and muddy depending on recent weather.

Near the village of Starunia, researchers discovered prehistoric fossils from an era when the landscape was drastically different, hinting at how the environment changed over millennia. These finds remind visitors that the land beneath the castle holds secrets from ages long past.
