Пам'ятний знак «Сумка», Monument and fountain in central Sumy, Ukraine
Pam'yatnyi znak "Sumka" is a monument featuring a fountain with an arched design from which water flows into a basin, topped with a bag symbol and a trident hook. A detailed mosaic made from small square tiles maps the administrative divisions of Sumy region and marks the main district centers.
The monument references a 17th-century legend about Cossack settlers finding bags of gold at the site where Sumy city now stands. The structure was built in 2008 as a gift from the Sumy community living in Kyiv, marking the Europe Day celebrations.
The carved images of two local churches appear in the arch, linking religious landmarks with the city's sense of place and identity.
The monument is located in central Sumy and is easy to reach on foot from the main streets. Visit during daylight hours to see the water flowing and to photograph the mosaic details clearly.
The artwork was created by sculptor Oleksii Shevchenko and serves three purposes at once: it functions as a fountain, displays a regional map, and represents the city's founding legend. This combination of practical design with historical meaning makes it more than just a typical monument in the public space.
