Zamek w Sutkowcach

Zamek w Sutkowcach is a stone fortress with corner towers, a gate tower, and defensive walls positioned on elevated ground overlooking the Ushytsia River. The structure uses the natural landscape to maximize its defensive capabilities.

The fortress was built in the 15th century by Fedir Sutkivetskyi as a local stronghold. In the 17th century, Oleksandr Balaban reinforced its defenses to better withstand raids from neighboring groups.

The castle grounds include the fortified Intercession Church, where military architecture merges with sacred space using Gothic design elements. This combination reveals how faith and defense were intertwined in daily life.

One preserved tower and sections of the defensive walls remain visible and accessible for exploration of the medieval fortification layout. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the ground is uneven and paths are not uniformly paved.

The European adventurer Count Alessandro Cagliostro stayed at the fortress during the 18th century when the Cossack Hrabyanka family owned it. This episode connects the site to broader European history and mystique.
