Monument to border guards and service dogs in Lehedzyne

The Monument to border guards and service dogs in Lehedzyne shows several bronze figures on a stone base. The sculptures represent frontier watchmen with German shepherds in a defensive position.

In July 1941, 500 border watchmen and 150 service dogs fought here against advancing SS units. The resistance lasted two days and delayed the enemy advance.

The site commemorates the partnership between soldiers and shepherd dogs who served together as a single unit. The bronze figures show this bond between humans and animals in border defense work.

The memorial stands near the village school. A burial site with the remains of fallen soldiers is located at the same spot.

In the final phase of combat, all service dogs were deployed against the attacking troops. This unusual tactic created a temporary delay in the enemy lines.
