Jupiter, abandoned factory in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, Ukraine
Jupiter is an abandoned factory in Pripyat that opened in 1980 and produced electronic components. The building contains multiple sections filled with machinery and equipment, which remain visible today although the walls show signs of age and neglect.
The plant was founded in 1980 and was part of the Soviet military and industrial complex with secret operations. After the Chernobyl accident in 1986, the city of Pripyat was evacuated, and the factory was permanently closed in 1996.
The Jupiter factory was a workplace for thousands of people who came here daily. The plant shaped local life by providing jobs and serving as the center of the city's economy.
Access to the plant is heavily restricted and requires permission and an experienced guide. The floors can be unstable and many areas are dangerous, so visits should only be undertaken with proper safety support.
The plant played an important role in reactor containment after the accident by manufacturing parts of the protective structure and studying radioactive materials. The building's large basement is considered one of the most dangerous places in the zone and once stored highly contaminated items.
